The Peace's Circle Tour:
Tumbler Ridge Highlight
Welcome to Tumbler Ridge! This small community, nestled in the foothills of the spectacular Rocky Mountains, has traditionally been known for coal mining, but . . . did you know?
Industrial activity in the area includes oil and gas, logging, wind farms and metallurgical coal that is amongst the highest quality in the world. Tumbler Ridge is the proud recipient of the 2015 Clean Energy BC Community of the Year Award and is home to an innovative, 3-D printing entrepreneur who won the Small Business BC Award for Best Concept in 2016.
Tumbler Ridge received a prestigious UNESCO Global Geopark designation in 2014 - only the second one in North America. Tumbler Ridge boasts the only tyrannosaurus trackway in the entire world and tours are available, including the very unique, nocturnal Wolverine Lantern Tour where the lanterns emit low-angled light, highlighting footprints which are barely visible during the day.
Annual events include the Grizfest Music Festival, which is in its 15th year and attracts talents such as Tom Cochrane, Mariana's Trench and Carly Rae Jepsen; and the Emperor’s Challenge cross-country half marathon, which attracts hundreds of participants nation-wide. Movies have been filmed in the area that take advantage of the spectacular scenery, with Kinuseo Falls providing the backdrop for scenes in the movie “Seventh Son”, starring Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges.
Tumbler Ridge has a brand new, state-of-the-art Visitors Information Centre, built by the District to support the community’s rapidly expanding tourism sector, which includes snowmobiling, ATVing, hiking, skiing, camping and river boat tours. It has a beautiful golf course, not only populated with avid golfers, but the occasional grizzly bear.
Tumbler Ridge has a Lions Club, a Global Geopark Committee, a Museum Foundation, a Hospital Foundation, a Chamber of Commerce and a Community Forest – all supported by a vibrant volunteer base that reflects a dynamic community spirit. The Recreation Centre is a focal point for the community, providing a venue for a wide range of sports activities, children’s programmes and cultural events. The local Northern Lights College campus offers programmes in the trades, academics and business - entrepreneurs are welcome.
