Details

WHEREAS the medical needs of the residents of small, rural, Canadian communities are identical to residents of more urban centres;

AND WHEREAS the training provided by Canadian medical programs does not prepare our General Practitioners for the many and varied challenges they must meet in a small, rural setting:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the NCLGA and UBCM work with the necessary Ministries to identify and develop appropriate changes in the Canadian medical education system required to ensure that General Practitioners can meet the needs of rural Canadians.

Additional Information

UBCM comments:

The UBCM membership has not previously considered a resolution requesting that changes be made to the Canadian medical education system to ensure that general practitioners can meet the needs of rural Canadians.

Clarification by the sponsor is requested – specifically, what specialized information does the sponsor consider to be required by general practitioners if they choose to work in a rural setting, and what would the sponsor consider to be “appropriate changes” in the Canadian medical education system in order to achieve this?
